听力原文:W: Well, we heard some people just now who seem to feel that other people have a
wrong idea about the work they do. Do you think this sort of thing is very widespread?

M: Oh absolutely. Most jobs or professions seem to have an image or a stereotype attached to them, often much to the irritation of the job holders. But there is a serious point to all this, too, that maybe young people actually choose their careers under the influence of these false images. And certainly, there is evidence that they may even avoid certain careers because they have a negative image. Well, on a large scale, as you can imagine, this could cause problems for whole sectors of the economy.

W: Er, you say there's evidence?

M: Oh most definitely. There was a survey recently into children's attitudes to different professions.

W: How was that done, though? Because, after all, children don't know much about the world of work before they get into it.

M: Well, exactly. What the investigators wanted to get at was their impressions and their prejudices. They used a very simple technique. They gave the children twelve pairs of statements. In each pair one statement was positive, the other was its opposite.

W: I see. What professions did they ask about?

M: Do you really want the whole list? It's huge!

A.He is a scientist.

B.He is a sociologist.

C.He is an officer.

D.He is a boss.

听力原文:W: Hi, Jim. Have you ever read the works of Ernest Hemingway?

M: Oh, I like Hemingway very much, his style, the Hemingway theme with a Hemingway hero.

W: You are really my bosom friend. Yes. Hemingway wrote all his life about one theme, that is "grace under pressure". The world Hemingway created is a world of violence, despair and death, a world in which man cannot find the meaning of life.

M: Yes. I have the same feeling with you. But his hero is not a coward, a weeper. In face of inevitable defeat, keeping a stiff upper-lip means a kind of victory.

W: So he often has stoic endurance. Even in defeat he can maintain some dignity; in spite of defeat he continues to fight with the despairing courage, which enables him to behave like a man, to assert his dignity in face, of adversity. From him we can see the spirit of the noble—Hemingway type of individualism.

M: It is a kind of tragic beauty. I am deeply touched by their spirit, even though it's futile to fight.

W: At least they give us a stir, give us an inspiration: never give up.

M: Yes. Hemingway is a myth in his own times, and a myth in American literature. But he ended his life to the whole world's shock.

W: He died a strong man, a hero. Few have such a despairing courage, and he did this with "grace under pressure.

What is the conversation mainly about?

A.The writing skills of Ernest Hemingway.

B.The life and profession of Hemmingway.

C.The hardship suffered by Hemingway.

D.Hemingway's theme and writing style.

In 1996, a meningitis epidemic hit the Nigerian state of Kano. Researchers from the American company, Pfizer, treated 100 Nigerian children with the experimental drug, Trovan. The Nigerian government and the Kano state government are suing Pfizer over the drug trial. (26) They say it caused the deaths of 11 children and seriously disabled others.

Why is the world's largest drug company embroiled in a global controversy?

A.Because this company sells drugs of low quality to Nigeria.

B.Because of a medical accident in Nigeria.

C.Because the company treated the Nigerian children with the experimental drug without full understanding.

D.Because the company uses the experimental drug Trovan around the whole world.

听力原文:W: (22) I don't know if we'll be able to spare a whole day at the Ocean Park. We've only got four days in Hong Kong, remember?

M: Oh, right, well, in that case, I'd advise you to get there early. (22)1t opens at 10 o'clock in the morning on week ends. Look, I think I've got a plan of the place somewhere. Let me see.., yes, here we are. You can have this.

W: Thanks.

M: OK, I'll show you. Let's start with the lower level. See? Here? You arrive by taxi or bus or whatever here, on the right, can you see? That's the bus terminal. And you go in through the main entrance. (23)Yon could go to the Water world first but I think you'd better skip that as you're short of time.

W: I can see the cable cars.

M: OK, walk past the cable car terminal, at the bottom of the plan, (24)and bear right past the Waterfall Gardens. Actually? have a look in, there are ducks and other birds in the pool there-it's very pretty. Then you'll see some steps u p on the left. Follow that path and you'll come to the Centenary Garden which is a good place to stop and take pictures if you've got your camera.

W: What's the next place?

M: Then carry on until you're almost at the Children Zoo. It takes quite a long time to walk around. But I do recommend the "touch and feed" section opposite, as I said. (25)The fun fair is very interesting? but it’s great fun for older children.

(23)

A.The Waterfall Garden.

B.The theatre.

C.The Water World.

D.The Ocean Park.
